Meet Gabe Seldess, lmft

supervisor-in-training

I am currently working toward my AAMFT Approved Supervisor status.  As an AAMFT Supervisor Candidate, I am enjoying the process of connecting with a new generation of marriage and family therapists and engaging in client work and theory from a new vantage point.

I graduated from The Family Institute at Northwestern University in 2003.  My early clinical experience focused strongly on working with at risk youth and their families, addressing issues around substance use, legal issues, and prevention / management of out-of-home placement.  Within the context of Intensive-In-Home services (a designation used in North Carolina – if not other places – to specify increased need for frequency and duration of services), I acted as team leader – guiding and directing the interventions of other service providers.  Over the last 10 years I have gravitated more toward couple’s work, enjoying issues around co-parenting, conflictual communication styles, and trust building.  I tend to lean toward Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, with an Experiential edge.  I try to stay with the seriousness and reverence of peoples’ issues and challenges, finding the humor and light in situations when I can.

As an AAMFT Supervisor Candidate, I hope to assist other therapists with improving skills related to connecting with diverse populations and issues, case conceptualization, and intervention planning.  I hope to foster growing awareness and development of each individual’s Self as Therapist and identify the path and skill sets most relevant for individual satisfaction in the counseling field as well as for the best outcomes for clients being served.  I hope to explore the balance between creative experimentation and ethical and effective care.  I also hope to maintain conversations and exploration of self-care and management of compassion fatigue.
